When is Endodontic Treatment Necessary?

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside of the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. The most common reasons for inflammation or infection are deep cavities, repeated dental procedures, cracks, or chips. Trauma can also cause inflammation and often shows up as discoloration of the tooth. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

Root Canal Treatment

Endodontics is most commonly associated with root canal treatment. A root canal is required when a tooth suffers a deep fracture that damages the pulp. The pulp is located in the root of the tooth, and is where the nerves and blood vessels are contained. Root canal treatment is when the canals of the tooth are cleaned out so that the majority of the tooth’s structure can be saved. Contrary to popular belief, modern technology makes this non-surgical treatment as pain free as getting a filling.

More Endodontic Treatments

Apicoectomy

In the event that a root canal is insufficient in healing a damaged tooth, an apicoectomy may be performed. This surgical procedure involves the endodontist making an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflammation. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip (apex). A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone naturally heals around the root, restoring full functionality.

Cracked Teeth

Cracked teeth can induce pain when chewing, temperature sensitivities, or even the release of biting pressure. Treatment varies depending on the type and severity of the crack, but early detection is necessary to avoid the condition worsening. Please contact us immediately if you are experiencing associated symptoms.

Traumatic Injury

Traumatic injury to the teeth is a serious matter. It can be caused by anything from sports injuries to a car accident. Teeth can be dislodged, where they are forced deep into their sockets, or avulsed, where they are completely knocked out of the mouth. If this happens, the tooth must be cleaned and remain moist in order to save it. If possible, push the tooth back into its socket. Seek immediate endodontic care as soon as possible.
